چکیده
Occurrence If you have asthma, you're not alone . . . Asthma is the sixth most common chronic condition in our nation, affecting between 12 and 17 million people. In children, asthma usually occurs by age 5 (several studies show that 50 to 80% of children with asthma develop symptoms before their 5 birthday). Adults usually develop asthma in their 30s, but even older adults can contract the disease (about 10% of new cases are people 65 years or older).

The Status of Fruit Bats on Guam
Two species of fruit bats are known from Guam in the southern Mariana Islands. Pteropus mariannus mariannus has declined greatly in abundance since the early 1900s. Its numbers decreased from an estimated 3,000 animals in 1958 to fewer than 50 individuals in 1978. However, by 1982, the population of this species increased to about 850 to 1,000 bats, probably through immigration of fruit bats to...
متن کاملTrace elements in Pandanus (Pandanus tectorius) from a manganese-enriched wetland in Southern Guam: a possible Lytico-Bodig connection?
Extremely high levels of manganese (Mn) were encountered in foliar tissue of the monocot tree Pandanus tectorius from southern Guam with values exceeding 10,000 microg/g dry weight in some wetland representatives. Historically, dried Pandanus leaves were used extensively as a source of domestic fiber in the local Chamorro culture. A possible link between the use of this plant and a neurodegener...
متن کاملCycad neurotoxin, consumption of flying foxes, and ALS/PDC disease in Guam.
The Chamorro people of Guam have been afflicted with a complex of neurodegenerative diseases (now known as ALS-PDC) with similarities to ALS, AD, and PD at a far higher rate than other populations throughout the world. Chamorro consumption of flying foxes may have generated sufficiently high cumulative doses of plant neurotoxins to result in ALS-PDC neuropathologies, since the flying foxes fora...
متن کاملBiomagnification of cyanobacterial neurotoxins and neurodegenerative disease among the Chamorro people of Guam.
We here report biomagnification (the increasing accumulation of bioactive, often deleterious molecules through higher trophic levels of a food chain) of the neurotoxic nonprotein amino acid beta-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) in the Guam ecosystem. Free-living cyanobacteria produce 0.3 microg/g BMAA, but produce 2-37 microg/g as symbionts in the coralloid roots of cycad trees. BMAA is concentrate...
متن کاملTrees, Parking Functions, Syzygies, and Deformations of Monomial Ideals
For a graph G, we construct two algebras whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis ...
